John Loo (Publisher, Editor-in-Chief, Webmaster): John has been involved in Southern California saltwater fly-fishing for over 30 years. He tied saltwater flies commercially while in college in the 70s, and has written occasional pieces for “Fly Fisherman”, “Fly Fishing in Salt Waters”, “California Fly Fisherman” and “Southwest Fly Fishing” magazines. He is a 30-year Information Technology veteran whose background includes technical, line- and senior- management positions in software development, systems architecture, and operations.An avid boater and offshore fisherman, John launched the website “Ocean Skiff Journal” (OSJ) in May, 2006, to service the information needs of people who fish offshore in small boats. In the spring of 2007, OSJ received the “Best Website of 2006” award from the Outdoor Writers Association of California.Frustrated by the lack of interest in Southern California saltwater fly-fishing by the national magazines, John launched “Beyond The Breakwater” to provide a forum for people interested in the opportunities that exist in the waters off Southern California. In Spring 2009, “Beyond The Breakwater” won the “Best Website of 2008” award from the Outdoor Writers Association of California.
Nick Curcione (Contributing Editor): Nick needs little introduction to people involved in the fly-fishing industry. Nick has written about, photographed, and lectured on fly-fishing for over 30 years, and has taught dozens of fly-fishing and fly-casting seminars around the US. A west coast saltwater fly-fishing pioneer, he has fished extensively on all three US coasts, as well as in Mexico, Central America and the South Pacific. A Contributing Editor for “Fly Fishing in Salt Waters” magazine, he is on the Pro Staff of Temple Fork Outfitters.
Capt. Scott Leon (Field Editor): Scott is the former Editor-in-Chief of “Fly Fishing in Salt Waters” magazine, and a former associate editor for “Marlin” magazine. He has written dozens of articles on saltwater fly-fishing and acted as an instructor in the oldest fly-fishing school in the US. He is on the Pro Staff of Temple Fork Outfitters and Mako Reels, and is sponsored by, or an advisor to Renzetti, Rising and Rio. He is the former owner of Paradigm Shift Charters.
Capt. Conway Bowman (Field Editor, San Diego Region): Conway is arguably one of the best-known outdoor figures in Southern California. Known for his skills at mako shark fishing in the San Diego area, Conway has been featured in numerous magazine articles and outdoor television shows. He is currently the host of the Fishing Channel’s “Fifty Places to Fish” show, hosted the TV show “Dollar Wise Fly” on the Versus Channel, and also co-hosted ESPN’s “In Search of Fly Waters” television series. He is on the Pro Staff of Nautilus and Spy Optics, and is sponsored by Patagonia, Okuma, and Scientific Anglers. He is the owner of Bowman Bluewater Guides and Outfitters, LLC.
Capt. Bill Matthews (Field Editor, Los Angeles/Orange County Region): Bill is one of the few fly-fishing guides in the Los Angeles and Orange County area that extensively fishes coastal and offshore waters. A regular in Santa Monica Bay, Catalina, and on the Long Beach “Wall”, he is well-versed on the waters of LA, OC, and Catalina, and is a former fly-rod world-record holder for White Seabass. He is the owner of Fly Time Guide Service, and runs an Edgewater 175CC
